About the Archive :: Preservation
The oldest tapes in the Archive were recorded in 1979, and like all magnetic media, they have a limited lifespan. We have restored and reformatted 2,841 of the oldest cassettes using funds raised by the late Alan Fortunoff and in partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage: A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. We are in the process of restoring and reformatting another 2,800 cassettes with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation Video Archive endowment fund. We are the Beta test site for a robotic preservation system.
