With all due repect, it's not that black and white. Please don't 
forget that non-profits--including NP publishing and almost all 
libraries--are "managed", to use your words, by people who are 
not owners. We work to fulfill a mission and our work is overseen 
by boards whose job it is to make sure that we stay on course. 
Publicly held companies report to boards, as well. The questions 
are 1) whether the board is doing its job and 2) if "the business 
of the firm" (to quote Drucker's famous line) is to create profit 
through trustworthy products and practices or to grab every 
dollar, euro, yuan, etc. by any means possible. Is it safe to say 
that there's a variety of opinion on which of those options is 
Elsevier's goal?

I don't own my workplace, but I sure do have an interest in its 
success.
