Student Library Advisory Committee
The Student Library Advisory Committee (SLAC) is an opportunity for Yale students in any major or program to shape how Yale Library serves students.
In 2025-26, the committee will meet three times per semester, always with food. Members will work with library leadership to turn student ideas into tangible improvements to study spaces, online resources, and library programming.
SLAC members have opportunities to visit non-public areas of the library, preview new services, and meet with library staff and leadership. Members get an insider’s view of the library and make a real impact.
Nov. 5, 2025 (Privacy and Personalization)
Chelsea Fitzgerald, Yale Library’s post-doctoral researcher in user experience, demonstrated an AI tool that Yale Library is developing that would give students new ways to search and discover resources in the the Yale Library catalog. SLAC members shared observations and questions on how the tool might change their work and learning processes.
In a discussion with Lauren DiMonte, associate university librarian for research and learning, and Fitzgerald, the group identified issues for consideration as the library continues to test and develop this tool. Students noted that the tool could save them significant time in resource discovery, and it could surface research resources they might not otherwise find. Questions raised for further consideration: Where and how does learning take place in the research process? Does that change if the discovery phase of research is facilitated by this tool?
This was the last SLAC meeting of 2025; DiMonte thanked the group for their contributions to the library this semester.
Oct. 21, 2025 (Insider Experience)
SLAC members were invited to a breakfast preview of the newly renovated Andrews Study Room (SML 2015) and to meet Barbara Rockenbach, Stephen F. Gates ’68 University Librarian. Attendees offered suggestions for additional features and decorative elements to be added during a second phase of the renovation.
Oct. 7, 2025 (Strategic Planning Input)
In a discussion led by Lauren DiMonte and Chelsea Fitzgerald, SLAC members reviewed and commented on the summary of a recent external review of Yale Library conducted by library leaders from Harvard University, North Carolina State University, and the University of California, Los Angeles.
Topics included:
- improving collection discovery tools
- activating library collections
- expanding and integrating library support for data and digital literacies, and for AI tools
- enhancing collaborative learning spaces
- enhancing support for cross-disciplinary research
The perspectives provided by SLAC members will be incorporated into the Yale Library strategic planning process, which will provide direction and guidance for the University library system over the next three years.
Sept. 10, 2025 (Perceptions of Yale Library)
At the first meeting of the 2024-25 academic year, Lauren DiMonte, associate university librarian for Research and Learning, welcomed new and returning members. In addition to scheduled meetings, optional “insider experiences” will be offered. Members are invited to suggest behind-the-scenes aspects they would like to learn about. We are committed to letting members know how their feedback is used to shape services, programs, and spaces across the library system.
Patricia Carey, director of communications strategy, led an exercise on student perceptions of Yale Library. Themes that surfaced included the richness and complexity of library resources as well as students’ desire for clearer pathways through the complexity. Students shared a range of feelings evoked by the library, from comforting to confusing and intimidating. The library is seen as one of the places on campus where different segments of the Yale community come together. The role of the library in supporting student success was also discussed. Insights from this session will be used to shape web content and other library communications.
Chelsea Fitzgerald, postdoctoral researcher in user experience, shared and tested with the group proposed modifications to the library’s Quicksearch discovery tool that were developed with input from some of last year’s committee members.
The next meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, noon-1 p.m. in Room 121 of the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning. The topic will be Yale Library strategic planning.

History and Charge
Established in 2020, SLAC shaped Yale Library’s pandemic policies and services. The committee’s official charge is “maintaining effective communication channels between student organizations, their members, and the Yale University Library. The Student Library Advisory Committee serves as a conduit for the transmission of student needs and concerns to the administration and staff of the Yale University Library.”
