The Scent of Green Papaya (Tran Anh Hung, 1993, 104 mins)
Set in midcentury Saigon, the first film in Tran’s Vietnam Trilogy offers a lushly-photographed look at the lives and interactions of a servant girl, a concert pianist, and a family in genteel decline. Raghu Pratap called this César winner and Oscar nominee “remarkable, both as an aesthetic and political project, in exploring the everyday life of Vietnamese people”. In Vietnamese with English subtitles.

Presented in 35mm by the Yale Film Archive with support from Paul L. Joskow ’70 M.Phil., ’72 Ph.D.
