Alternative Format Reading Materials

There are various types of software that Student Accessibility Services utilizes to convert existing educational material into alternative formats. These alternative format reading materials are provided in the form of PDF files, audio files, and Braille. Students who have their accommodations approved will receive these materials at no cost. Faculty/staff seeking accommodations should visit the Office of Institutional Equity & Access.

Hathi Trust

Eligible students, faculty, and staff at Yale can receive access to in-copyright materials in HathiTrust. The materials must either be held currently, or have been held previously, at Yale Library.

Access to material is available to users with a print disability for which access to digital copies of library books is a reasonable and appropriate accommodation. A print disability may be a visual impairment, learning disability, physical disability, or other disability that impedes a person’s ability to access standard print.

Access is governed by one of two Yale University Offices:
How to Access Materials in Hathi Trust:
You must be registered with the appropriate office listed above as a person with a print disability.
  1. Go to the Advanced Full-text Search in HathiTrust and Log in.
  2. Choose Yale University from the drop-down list and log in using your Yale NetID and password.
  3. Be sure to check the box for “Held by Yale University” under “Limit to.”
  4. Run the search.
  5. If the book you want is listed, copy and paste two pieces of information into an email to sasat@yale.edu:
  6. The Yale University Library will then retrieve a PDF of the item from HathiTrust, post it on a secure site, and send an email notification that the item is available.

Parking and Transportation

The Yale Parking & Transit Office provides a variety of parking and transportation resources on and around campus. Students, staff, and faculty who require proximate parking may obtain a medical waiver form at the Yale parking office or on the Parking Forms page. If approved, the Parking Service Office will make every effort to assign parking that meets the individual’s needs as circumstances allow. In addition, door-to-door van service is available from parking lots to buildings within the campus boundaries. This program is restricted to approved registered users and runs on a limited basis. Student Accessibility Services: Parking and Transportation provides information about accessible parking on campus, campus transportation services, and accessible transit.

Campus Map and Building Access

To view the accessibility of buildings on campus, go to the Campus Map, choose a building location, and use the Accessibility option in the upper-right pop-up window. Additionally, visit Yale’s All Gender Restroom Map or the Lactation Room Map.

Users with disabilities are eligible to obtain a proxy borrower’s card from the Sterling Memorial Library Service Desk for a specified person to borrow library materials on their behalf. Proxy cards for non-students/staff will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on an applicant’s particular circumstances.

Service Animals

Service animals are allowed in all Yale libraries; this includes dogs and miniature horses only. Support animals such as birds and pigs are not allowed in libraries.
