In a recent article in “The Scholarly Kitchen,” Daniel Dollar—associate university librarian for scholarly resources—outlined the goals and achievements of Research4Life. Since 2002, Research4Life has provided researchers, practitioners, and students in lower-income countries with online access to academic and professional peer-reviewed content. The group’s aim is to improve teaching, research, and policymaking.

Yale and Cornell universities are two of the founding partners of Research4Life. They work alongside five United Nations agencies, the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM), and more than 200 international publishers and technology partners. Dollar is the co-chair of the organization’s fundraising committee.

In his role at the library, Dollar leads teams of colleagues in Access Services, Assessment and User Experience Research, Preservation and Conservation Services, Resource Sharing, and Scholarly Communication and Collection Strategy.

“Both Research4Life and Yale Library share a fundamental vision,” Dollar said, “that is, to be a catalyst for individual and societal growth by ensuring broad access to the scholarly record and accelerating the creation of new knowledge.” Both are also committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Today, thanks to the work of Research4Life, Dollar reports that “more than 11,800 local, not-for-profit institutions across 125 Research4Life-eligible countries have access to an expansive collection of peer-reviewed scholarly content, comprising more than 200,000 open and subscribed resources.”
