New autumn events in library’s Book Talk series
This November and December, Sterling Memorial Library will host two new events in its Book Talk series. In November, Meghan O’Rourke, editor of The Yale Review and finalist for the 2022 National Book Award, will be in conversation with Ross Douthat, senior fellow at Yale’s Jackson School of Global Affairs and an op-ed columnist for the New York Times. In December, Rebecca (R. F.) Kuang, ‘GSAS ‘27 will discuss her new book with translator and editor Robyn Creswell, associate professor of Comparative Literature.
O’Rourke’s award-nominated book, The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness (Riverhead Books, 2022), draws on her own medical experiences and those of of patients, practitioners, and scholars of chronic and autoimmune illness, while tracing Western definitions of health and disease. Kuang’s bestselling book, Babel, or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of the Oxford Translators’ Revolution (Harper Voyager, 2002), is an alternative 19th-century history of Oxford University, in which a fantastical Royal Institute of Translation runs the British Empire.

The first book talk in the 2022–2023 series, held in October, featured Ivano del Prete, who presented his book On the Edge of Eternity: The Antiquity of the Earth in Medieval & Early Modern Europe (Oxford University Press, 2022). On the Edge of Eternity offers an original and nuanced account of the history of deep time, illuminating the relationship between science and Christianity in the medieval and early modern periods.
